An 83-year-old man is dead and a 78-year-old woman is injured after a commercial truck rear-ended their car Tuesday on Highway 101 in Hants County, according to the RCMP.

The crash happened just before 2:30 p.m. near St. Croix, which is near Windsor.

The 83-year-old's car had stopped in the right lane of the divided highway in the eastbound direction when it was struck by the commercial truck.

Cpl. Jennifer Clarke said investigators don't know why the car was stopped.

The 83-year-old man died at the scene, while his passenger was flown to hospital via LifeFlight. She is expected to survive.

Highway was closed for several hours

Both the man and woman are from Margaretsville, N.S.

The driver of the commercial truck had minor injuries.

Clarke doesn't know if charges will be laid against the driver because the investigation is still in its early stages.

Highway 101 was closed for several hours while a collision analyst examined the scene.
